I keep seeing people skip the primer step on drywall patches

I was helping a friend fix a hole in his wall last month, and he just slapped the joint compound right onto the raw drywall paper. I told him he needed to seal it first with a PVA primer or a shellac-based one if there was any water stain. He argued it was a small patch, but two weeks later the patch was a shiny spot that wouldn't take paint. I've seen this maybe five times now. It matters because the compound soaks in unevenly and the paint flashes. What's the biggest patch you've seen fail from skipping primer?

That DIY show wall fail is exactly what happens on a bigger scale. I saw a whole ceiling repair flash because they didn't seal the mud, and it looked like a checkerboard when the light hit it. People don't get that the paper facing is like a sponge, and mud soaks in at a totally different rate than the rest of the wall. It's not about the patch size, it's about the material you're sticking it to. Skipping primer is just asking for a visible repair.
