My brother-in-law said my paint prep was 'good enough for a rental, not a home' and he was right.

Wasn't there a whole thing online about "landlord special" paint jobs? That's exactly what he's talking about. Like just slapping paint over hinges and outlets, not fixing cracks in the trim, or leaving all the old drips on the baseboard. It looks okay from far away, but up close it's a mess. For your own place, you gotta take the plates off, sand the rough spots, and use good tape. It takes forever but you see the difference every single day.

Oh man, that landlord special is the absolute worst. I've seen places where they painted right over light switch covers and you can barely flip the switch anymore. But here's what I've always wondered about that approach: isn't there a point where the cheap paint job actually costs you more in the long run? Like having to chip paint off hinges and outlets later, or getting a bad reputation with tenants who talk online. Do you think landlords who do that are just being lazy, or is it a calculated "this saves me money now and I don't care about tomorrow" kind of deal?
