My brother told me to use a 2x4 as a temporary support while I replaced a deck post. The whole thing shifted and now I'm out $300 for a new beam.

My temporary support was so bad it should have come with a warning label.

Look at the new park benches downtown. They put in cheap plastic ones last year that cracked in the cold. The city just replaced them all with solid wood ones that will actually last. Some quick fixes are just the first step to a real solution.
