The way I fix a squeaky floor has changed a lot since the 90s

Back when I first bought my house in Tacoma, I'd just drive a regular nail down through the carpet to stop a squeak. It worked, but it was messy and you could see the nail head. Now, I use a special screw kit from the hardware store that you drive in and then snap off below the surface. The change came after I ruined a good piece of carpet in 2005 and my brother-in-law showed me the new way. Has anyone else found a better trick for old hardwood floors?

Still have a few visible nails from my own learning phase.

My dad's "fixes" are why I own a cordless drill now. Those old nails are basically just floor decorations at this point. The snap-off screws are the only thing that's ever actually shut them up for good.

Honestly, that screw kit method you mentioned is a total game changer. Tbh I'm still dealing with squeaks from the old way my dad "fixed" our floors when I was a kid. Did you find that the snap-off screws hold up long term, or do the squeaks ever come back in the same spot?
