I just wasted $40 on a 'quick fix' drain cleaner that made things way worse

My kitchen sink was draining slow, so I grabbed some foaming drain stuff from the hardware store. It didn't clear the clog and actually ate through a section of the old pipe under the sink, which I found out when it started dripping. Anyone know a real way to clear a grease clog without wrecking the pipes?

That "ate through the old pipe" part is exactly why I stopped using that stuff. I used to swear by the chemical fixes until I saw what they did to the PVC joints in my last apartment. Now I just use a plunger made for sinks and lots of hot water. It takes some elbow grease but it doesn't melt anything.

Wait, you can actually melt PVC with drain cleaner? I used to dump that stuff in without a second thought. But seeing that comment about joints getting eaten away, it makes sense now. I guess I just got lucky it never wrecked my pipes. Maybe I should just stick to the plunger method from now on.
