I used to think wood filler was the only way to fix a gouged floorboard
For years I'd mix up that putty and try to match the stain, but it always looked fake. Then my neighbor in Austin showed me how to use a wax repair stick from a brand called Mohawk. You just melt it in, let it harden, and buff it smooth, and the color match is way better. Has anyone else tried this method on their hardwood floors?

Yeah but I've had good luck with just the wax sticks for pretty deep stuff, @jana_scott. You really have to overfill it and let it cool slow so it doesn't sink. It blends better than any filler I've ever tried.

Jana_scott is totally right about needing filler for a deep hole. I learned that the hard way after trying to just cram wax into a big dent. The wax shrank down as it cooled and left a sunken spot. Now I use a two-step thing with a plastic filler first, let it dry completely, then melt the color stick over it. The wax fills the grain and makes it look way more real than stain alone. It's not a perfect fix, but you really have to look close to see it.

Wait, isn't that wax trick just for small scratches? For a real gouge, you still need filler first to build it up, then you can use the wax on top for the color.
