My brother-in-law said using a hammer on a stuck window is fine and I'm overthinking it

He argued that a few good taps on the frame never hurt anything, but I've seen too many cracked sills from that exact move. I still use a flat bar and a block of wood, which takes an extra minute but works every time. Anyone have a better method for a window that's painted shut?

Ever see what a hammer did to my buddy's old window frame? He tried the "few taps" thing last summer, and next thing you know there's a huge split down the side of the wood. Had to replace the whole thing, cost way more than taking an extra minute. That flat bar and wood block method might seem slow, but it spreads the force out so you don't crack anything. I'd stick with your way, lol.

Is your brother-in-law also the guy who fixes doorbells by just hitting the wall?

..and he PROBABLY uses a pipe wrench on a faucet too. Your flat bar and block method is the RIGHT way, that's not even debatable. After fixing enough of my own mistakes over the years, I've learned that taking ONE extra minute saves you from spending an entire afternoon with a chisel and wood filler.
