PSA: I stopped using bleach in my bathroom grout and it's actually cleaner now

I used to scrub my bathroom grout with bleach every month for like 2 years thinking that was the only way to keep it white. About 6 months ago I switched to a steam cleaner I got for $40 on Amazon and the difference is night and day. The bleach was actually breaking down the grout sealant over time making it hold more dirt. Now I steam the grout every 3 months and it stays bright without that chemical smell. Has anyone else found that less harsh methods work better for grout long term?

Bleach is actually a tried and true method that's been used for decades. Steam cleaners might seem gentler, but they introduce moisture deep into grout lines that can lead to mold growth behind the walls. I've seen way too many people steam clean and end up with a musty smell that never goes away because the water soaks into the backing material. Bleach dries fast and sanitizes properly without leaving dampness behind. Your grout sealant breaking down sounds more like an application issue than a bleach issue. Proper ventilation and letting it sit for 10 minutes before scrubbing makes all the difference.

Stick with what works, right? I've been there myself - scrubbing grout with bleach and wondering if my lungs would ever forgive me. @the_mary makes a solid point about steam cleaning and hidden moisture though. I learned that one the hard way when I tried steaming my own bathroom grout and ended up with a weird smell behind the wall that took weeks to go away. Now I just accept that my grout will look okay and my knees will hurt from kneeling there scrubbing it. The 10 minute soak rule is legit too, saves your arms from killing yourself over the brush.

Oh man, bleach and lung damage - name a more iconic duo, right? I swear every time I try to clean grout I end up questioning my life choices while coughing up a lung. Your wall smell story is exactly why I've given up on anything that involves moisture near my bathroom. I just accept my grout is gonna look pretty mediocre and my knees are gonna hate me forever. The ten minute soak rule is a lifesaver though, I learned that after scrubbing so hard I couldn't feel my hand for an hour.
