Shoutout to the hardware store guy who showed me the putty knife trick for paint caps

Was at Ace Hardware in Portland last week grabbing more paint for my living room. Old dude stocking shelves saw me struggling to pry open a gallon can with a screwdriver and showed me this simple trick. He tapped the putty knife on the edge of the lid all around, and the cap popped right off without bending. No more dented lids or paint splatter on my jeans. Has anyone else got a workaround for those stuck paint lids that actually works?

Yeah, because who doesn't love a good game of Paint Can Roulette with a screwdriver? I've been using a flathead and a hammer like some kind of caveman, so thanks for the tip. Next you'll tell me there's a trick for not getting caulk all over my thumbs.
