Showerthought: store-bought drain cleaners are a waste of money compared to a cheap snake

After $45 on gels and foams did nothing for a slow kitchen sink in my 1980s house, I spent $8 on a basic 25-foot manual snake and pulled out a clog in 10 minutes flat, am I the only one who thinks the liquid stuff is just flushing cash down the drain?

Flushing cash down the drain" is pretty much the story of every quick fix that promises magic in a bottle.

Oh, you know what my friend Sarah did once? She saw this ad for a weight loss tea, swore it would change her life. Spent like sixty bucks on a month's supply, drank that nasty stuff every morning for two weeks. All it did was make her run to the bathroom and she lost maybe three pounds of water weight. She felt terrible and grumpy the whole time too. When she stopped, the weight came right back plus a little extra. She still gets embarrassed when I bring it up.

...and that's exactly how I feel about those expensive enzyme drain treatments. I fell for the hype too, bought a three-pack of this natural stuff that was supposed to eat away grease and hair. Twenty bucks later my sink was still backing up and I had a kitchen that smelled like a science fair project. My neighbor finally loaned me his snake and I cleared the whole mess in less time than it takes to watch a sitcom. Now I just keep a basic snake under the sink and tell everyone the same thing you are. It's like people forget that sometimes the simplest tool is the best one.
