Used a butter knife to fix my noisy ceiling fan last weekend

I was about to replace the whole fan until I found out the blades were just slightly off balance. Stuck a butter knife under one edge to level it and the wobble stopped completely. Anyone else got weird fixes that saved them a trip to the store?

Is it weird that I actually read somewhere that butter knives are surprisingly good for fan balancing? I saw some old home maintenance blog talking about using kitchen utensils as makeshift tools and I thought it was a joke at first. But hey, if it worked for you maybe it's legit. I tried using a penny taped to a blade once and that was a total disaster, made the wobble way worse. Maybe I should dig up that blog again and see what other crazy tricks they had.

My buddy tried the butter knife trick on his ceiling fan last summer and it actually killed the wobble dead. He's still using it and the fan runs smooth as hell, though his wife thinks it looks ridiculous.

Three quarters of a butter knife taped to one of my ceiling fan blades has been holding steady for about two years now. I tried the penny trick too and it damn near launched the fan off the ceiling, so I feel your pain. My wife doesn't even notice the knife anymore, but my mother in law pointed it out at Thanksgiving and asked if we were "doing okay financially." Now I just tell people it's a custom vibration dampener I engineered myself.
