Warning: I ruined my toilet tank because I used a bleach tablet without checking the label first

So I dropped one of those bleach tablets into the tank about 6 months ago because I was tired of scrubbing stains. Worked great for a while. Then last week I noticed a crack running down the inside of the tank. Plumber told me the bleach ate through the rubber gaskets and then the porcelain started to fail. Cost me $180 for a new toilet because I was too lazy to just scrub with a brush. Anyone else learn this the hard way or was it just me?

Went through the exact same thing last year with a "flushable" cleaning pod I found at the dollar store. Thought I was being smart saving money, then my toilet started leaking like a sieve three months later. The rubber flapper turned into this weird slimy mush and the fill valve just gave up completely. Ended up spending way more on parts and a weekend of plumbing YouTube tutorials than I would've on a toilet brush and some comet powder.

Oh man, the rubber flapper turning into slimy mush is SO familiar! I had that exact same problem with a cheap tablet I grabbed off Amazon. What finally worked for me was switching to a basic bleach tablet but putting it in the tank's overflow tube instead of just dropping it in. I also started wiping down the inside of the bowl with a wet scrubber and some vinegar once a week. Night and day difference. No more melted gaskets or mysterious leaks.

180 bucks for a life lesson in laziness, not bad.
