Changed my mind about those expensive laminate floor cutters after visiting my uncle's shop

I went to my uncle's garage last weekend and watched him zip through a whole living room install with just a $40 scoring tool and a snap cutter. He said he's been doing floors for 12 years and never touched a power saw for laminate. Has anyone else tried the cheap scoring method or is it just a trap for newbies?

Is there ever a point where the scoring method just doesn't cut it for you? I see where you're coming from, but I tried the scoring and snap cutter route a few years back and had nothing but trouble. Maybe my technique was off, but I got chipping on half the cuts and a few pieces that just wouldn't break straight. I ended up buying a used miter saw for 80 bucks and never looked back. For me, spending a little more upfront saved hours of frustration and waste.

I used to think the scoring method was just some cheap hack that would leave gaps everywhere. But honestly watching my buddy do a whole kitchen with just a snap cutter changed my mind too. Ive seen guys drop $600 on saws and still mess up cuts left and right. The trick is you gotta score it deep and snap it clean on the line like snapping a cracker. I still keep a jigsaw for tricky stuff around door frames but for straight cuts the scoring tool works 98% of the time.

Wait you saw a guy do a whole kitchen with just a snap cutter? That's insane. I've got a buddy who tried that once and ended up with like 15 miscut tiles and a pile of broken scrap. I guess if you got the touch it works but that's a lot of trust in one tool.
