My neighbor insisted I was crazy for not back-priming the cut ends of cedar fence boards.
He watched me slap up 80 feet of fencing without hitting a single raw end with primer, then handed me a photo 3 years later showing every single board rotting at the base, and I never skip a seal again, you ever had a local tradesman prove you wrong that hard?

Was it untreated cedar or did you find out later the supplier sold you something labeled as cedar but wasn't? Ground moisture could definitely speed things up but three years still sounds fast for real cedar to go that bad.

Cedar is supposed to be naturally rot resistant though. Three years for a treated fence feels like you got sold the wrong wood or something is off with the ground moisture.
