My old way of painting trim was a total mess

For years I'd just tape everything off with that blue painter's tape, slap on two coats, and peel it off. It always left a jagged edge or pulled up fresh paint. About six months ago I saw a video where a guy used a trim guard and a good angled brush instead. I tried it on the window frames in my living room and it cut my time in half. The lines came out super clean with no tape at all. Has anyone else switched from taping to freehand with a guard? I'm curious if it works on really old, uneven baseboards.

That trick works great on old baseboards if you sand down the high spots first.

Baseboard sanding? @nancythomas I think some people overthink this stuff. I just slapped some tape on my weird 1960s trim and it was fine. Maybe your baseboards are just more picky than mine.

Totally feel you, my old taping jobs looked like a toddler did them. Gonna try that guard method on my ancient baseboards like taylor_miller10 said.
