Ngl, that basement flooring project in my neighbor's house scared me straight
I was helping my buddy tear out old vinyl tiles in his basement last Saturday when we found black mastic underneath. Tested positive for asbestos and now he's stuck with a $2,000 abatement bill. Anyone else ever get blindsided by hidden hazards in a reno?

Honest question though - how sure are you it was actually asbestos? Those home test kits are notoriously unreliable and give false positives all the time. Half the time people panic over something that's just old glue or regular construction debris. Your buddy might have dropped $2k for nothing. Plus even if it was asbestos, unless he was planning to sand it all down and snort the dust, leaving it alone is usually fine. The whole abatement industry has a huge incentive to make people think every speck is gonna kill them. Feel like half these "nightmare" stories are just people getting scared into spending money they didn't need to.
