Unpopular opinion: Those fancy self-leveling compounds aren't worth the price
My neighbor Tom, a concrete guy for 20 years, told me I was wasting money on self-leveling compound for my basement floor in Phoenix. He said a good long straightedge and a traditional mix works just as well if you take your time and get the prep right. I tried his method on a 300 square foot pour last weekend and saved $80, so is the convenience really worth it for the average DIYer?

$80 saved is $80 saved and if it lays flat who cares what name is on the bag. Is a slightly easier pour really worth that much to most people? Sounds like Tom saved you from buying into the hype.

That whole "brand name or bust" mindset definitely misses the point most of the time. In my experience, the only real difference between a $30 bag and a $150 bag is how much the company spent on marketing and packaging. Your mileage may vary, but once you start using something daily, the hype fades real fast and the savings stay in your pocket.

$80 saved is $80 saved" - that's literally the same thing I told my buddy when he bought a 10 pack of white t-shirts instead of one expensive brand name one. They all end up with coffee stains eventually anyway, right?
