Warning: my DIY backsplash tile fell off the wall 3 days after I installed it
I was standing in my kitchen in Austin last Saturday morning, making coffee, when I heard this crash. Three of my brand new subway tiles (the ones I spent 6 hours cutting and spacing) had popped right off the wall and shattered on the floor. Turns out I didn't clean the drywall dust off before applying the thinset, so the bond was basically useless. I had to scrape all the old mortar off, vacuum everything, and re-tile that whole section - took another 4 hours. Has anyone else had tiles fall off because of a stupid prep mistake like this?

We ran a whole house remodel a few years back at 123 Maple Drive and I swear I'm still finding dust in places I didn't know existed... I ended up having to wash every single piece of clothing in the house twice because of the fine stuff settling into the fibers. One trick that saved me was taping those plastic drop cloths over every doorway with painter's tape, not just on the floor but all the way to the ceiling. Also, a shop vac with a HEPA filter is worth every penny for cleanup, but you gotta empty it outside or you'll just blow the dust right back into the room.
