I was reading an old drafting standards manual from 1988 and found out they used to recommend a 0.5mm lead for all general work, not the 0.7mm I've always used.

Notice how everything gets a little thicker and softer over time. Pencil leads, french fry portions, even the lines on highway lanes. We used to get by with less and call it precise. Now we need the extra buffer just to function without constant breakage. It's like the whole world decided to switch from 0.5mm to 0.7mm and pretend it's progress.

Wait, wasn't 0.5mm the standard for technical pens back then? I'm pretty sure the 0.7mm recommendation came later for regular pencils because it's less likely to break. That old manual might have been for a specific type of drafting work.

Tell that to my broken 0.5mm lead from last week.
