Overheard a foreman say 'your splices are only as good as your prep work'

I was walking past a crew doing a big steel job in Phoenix and that line stuck with me. Now I'm wondering how many hours I've wasted redoing connections because I rushed the cleaning step has anyone else noticed a big difference after slowing down prep work?
