PSA: That talk with the old surveyor changed how I check elevations

Was on a site last week in Greenville and this 60-year-old surveyor named Gene pulled me aside. He said I was relying too much on the digital readout and not checking my benchmark against the actual curb. He showed me how a 0.3 degree tilt in the rod throws off a whole slab pour. Has anyone else had an old timer point out a bad habit you didn't even know you had?

That 0.3 degree thing Gene showed you is wild. I've been checking my rod bubble like crazy ever since a similar heads up from an old mason on a sidewalk job.

That rod tilt thing got me on a parking garage once, cost us a whole day.

Jesus, 0.3 degrees? That's insane. I would've never guessed such a tiny tilt could wreck a whole slab. It makes total sense though, math doesn't lie. That's the kind of thing that keeps me up at night now.
