Warning: A client in Denver called my floor plan 'a fire drill' and they were right
I sent over a set of residential plans last week, and the builder called me. He said, 'Finley, the bedroom egress path is a fire drill, you've got a hard corner right at the closet.' I looked back at my drawing and he was totally correct. I had the door swing wrong, making the clear path too tight to meet code. I changed the door to swing out into the hall instead, which fixed it in about ten minutes. Anyone else had a simple detail like a door swing cause a major code headache?

Lol "fire drill" is such a perfect way to put it. I swear the smallest details are always the ones that get you. I spent half a day once because a window was like an inch too high off the floor. The inspector just pointed at it and shook his head, it was so dumb.

That door swing fix is a classic. I once had a window sill height off by two inches and it failed the bedroom egress check. The small stuff always trips you up on the big rules.
