Watching DIY garage conversions go smoother with proper floor plans

I've been seeing a lot of people in my area convert their garages into living spaces lately. Most start with just an idea and a tape measure, skipping any real drafting. Last year, a client asked me to look over his conversion after he hit a snag with the electrical layout. His rough sketch didn't account for load-bearing walls, so his new room had wires running in weird places. I sat down and made a simple CAD drawing of the space, and it showed exactly where to move outlets for code. He was amazed how a clear plan fixed his problem fast. Now I tell anyone doing a big home change to spend an hour on a digital draft first. It turns a guessing game into a straight path. Has anyone else pushed for more planning before the hammer swings?

Learned my lesson the hard way trying to build a simple shelf without a plan. Eyeballed the whole thing. Ended up with a cut so crooked it looked like a puzzle piece from a different box. Had to explain to my partner why our new "floating" shelf was permanently air-qualifying. Now even my coffee table sketches have measurements. That little mistake cost me a whole Saturday.

Oh man, my buddy tried to build a shed without a plan! He just started nailing boards together. He ran into a huge problem when the roof pieces didn't line up with the walls at all. He had to take the whole thing apart and lost a whole weekend of work.

Ever try using a free floor plan app? I messed up a closet layout by just guessing, but then I used one on my phone. It showed me right away that my shelf idea would block the door. Totally saved the project, kinda like how @theac63 learned to measure after that shelf.
