My grandpa swore by using a garden hose to clear a clogged pump intake
He told me, 'Just give it a good blast from the shore side, it'll push the muck right through.' Tried it last week on the old Erie Canal project and ended up spraying myself and three coworkers with about fifty pounds of river silt. Anyone have a less messy method for clearing those intakes?

My uncle had a similar belief about using a pressure washer on his boat's bilge pump. He insisted it was the fastest way, right up until the spray kicked back a solid chunk of decaying seaweed that landed in his morning coffee. The smell alone convinced him to buy a proper hand pump for that kind of job. I guess some old methods are best left in the past, especially when they involve high pressure and things you don't want on your face.
