Overheard a guy at the supply yard say his cutterhead was 'singing' before it seized

He was picking up a new suction line and told the counter guy his old dredge made a high whine for about two days straight. He thought it was just a pump bearing and kept pushing. Ended up being a cracked wear plate on the cutterhead that let grit into the main gearbox. Total loss. I've always just listened for the usual knocks and rumbles. Has anyone else had a weird sound like that turn out to be a major problem?

That high whine is a dead giveaway. Shut it down right away and check the cutterhead seals.

But what if the whine was just a loose belt?

Heard that whine means the bearings are already toast.
