Overheard a foreman say my mud was too thick and it clicked why my tape kept blistering

I was working a job in Austin last week and this old timer walked by my board, poked it, and just said, 'That's pancake batter, not mud.' Ngl I was embarrassed but he was right. I always mixed it a little heavy thinking it would fill gaps better but it was actually trapping air behind the tape. Has anyone else had that moment where one dumb comment from a vet totally changed how you work?

Walked into the hardware store looking like I had a jailbreak pancake mix in my bucket, felt real dumb. Especially when the old guy who called me out gave me a level and a thumbs up like I just joined a secret club.

Nah but thin mud sags, don't it?

Used to think thick mud meant stronger joints until I had to scrape off a whole sheet of bubbled tape. @jenkins.reese that hardware store moment is exactly how it goes, they make you feel like you just learned a secret handshake. Lightened up my mix and the tape lays flat now, no more blistering. Took that old timer's advice and it cut my rework down to almost nothing.
