Switched from a 6-inch to a 12-inch taping knife for the final coat

I always stuck with my old 6-inch knife for the last skim coat, thinking more control was better. Did a side-by-side test on a garage ceiling job last Thursday, one section with each. The 12-inch blade laid down a way flatter finish with half the ridges, and I was done almost an hour faster. Who else has a tool switch that seemed weird but actually paid off?

That's a huge time save. Did you have to change your mud mix at all for the bigger blade, or was your usual mix just fine?

Actually had to tweak the mix a bit. The bigger blade holds more mud, so I added a touch more water to keep it from setting up too fast on me. Found the usual mix was dragging and drying out before I could get a clean swipe. Just a slight adjustment, but it made all the difference.

Notice how often the right tool needs the right setup to actually work. Sandra_Taylor's mix tweak is a perfect example of that basic rule (it pops up everywhere, honestly). Getting the small details right is what makes the big change worth it.
