Three years ago in a Portland remodel, I stopped using a hawk for taping and never went back

Everyone on site said I was nuts, but I switched to just using a mud pan and my trowel. I found the hawk slowed me down, especially on ceilings. Last week on a big job, I finished a whole room's tape coat an hour faster than the guy using a hawk. I get it's a classic tool, but for me, it just gets in the way. Anyone else try ditching the hawk and have it work out?

My uncle taught me to tape in Spokane back in 2010 and swore by the hawk. I tried it his way for a year and just never got the hang of it. Dropped it for a pan and my speed went way up, especially on ceilings like you said. Some guys just have that old school muscle memory, but for new work it feels like an extra step.

It's funny how often we stick with a tool just because it's what we learned first.
