Still think 'more followers = more business'? Had a client with 12k followers and zero local sales in Edmonton.

I keep seeing people in this group talk about growing their Instagram or LinkedIn followers like it's the key to everything. Last month I helped a local Edmonton plumber who had 12,000 followers on Facebook. Sounded impressive right? But he told me he hadn't gotten a single lead from social media in 6 months. Meanwhile his competitor with 400 followers but a solid Google My Business profile is booked solid. I checked it myself. The guy with the following was posting generic national memes. The guy with 400 was posting photos of his actual jobs in Edmonton neighbourhoods. Am I missing something or are people just chasing vanity numbers?

12,000 followers and zero calls - that's rough. I once spent six months trying to get my own plumbing van wrapped with my number and ended up with a design that made it look like a pizza delivery truck, so I guess we all chase the wrong things sometimes. @john650, your painter example is spot on - folks just want to see work that looks like it could be on their own street.

Saw the same thing with a painter in Calgary last year. He had like 8,000 followers on Instagram from sharing those "satisfying paint cutting" reels from random accounts. Zero calls. Then I looked at this other painter with maybe 600 followers who just posted pictures of his work on local streets with the house numbers visible. People recognized the neighborhoods and called him directly. The big follower guy was just entertaining people from other countries. The small guy was talking to his actual neighbors.

Well ain't that the truth. Chasing followers for business is like buying a bigger TV to watch commercials.
