That Chamber mixer last Thursday left me questioning if anyone actually listens during the speed networking rounds...

I spent 3 minutes pitching my HVAC business to a guy who clearly just wanted to grab another free slider and then he handed me a card for his dog grooming service - has anyone else noticed these events turning into more of a free buffet than real networking?

Oh man, you hit on something real here. It's like everyone's got a script they're reading from but nobody's listening to anyone else's. I see the same thing at my local coffee shop when people stand in line on their phones the whole time, order without even looking up, then get surprised when the barista gets their order wrong. Or at the grocery store when someone blocks the whole aisle because they're too busy chatting on speakerphone to notice the world around them. We're all just going through the motions, handing out business cards and eating free food, but nobody's actually connecting. You could have told that guy you were a part-time astronaut and he'd still have tried to sell you dog shampoo.

@benclark what do you think is driving it though? Is it phones or just people being checked out in general?
