That one inspector in Des Moines who told me to stop using wire nuts on aluminum

He handed me a packet of AlumiConn connectors after failing my panel inspection, and I have to admit they work way better. Has anyone else had to completely swap out their termination method after a failed inspection?

Those purple wire nuts were ALWAYS a bandaid fix for a real problem.

The 2017 code cycle changed everything for aluminum terminations where I work. I went through three failed inspections before switching to the AlumiConns and never looked back. The inspector actually showed me how the wire nuts had been loosening up over time due to thermal expansion, which I never really thought about before. I still see guys using the purple wire nuts though and I get why they're hesitant to change.

Oh wow, that thermal expansion thing is interesting. I never would have thought about that either but now I'm gonna be checking all my old aluminum jobs.
