Bringing an old cassette deck back to life felt like time travel
My uncle taught me to clean the heads with alcohol back in the 90s. That exact method still worked when I found one in my attic last week!

Honestly that bit about cleaning the heads with alcohol brought it all back. I did the exact same thing with a cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol on an old deck I found. Tbh the smell of that alcohol while you're cleaning is such a specific memory. It's crazy how well that simple fix works after all this time.

Hold up, I've gotta disagree on that one. That alcohol trick only works for light surface grime and even then it's a temporary band-aid. If the heads are worn or really gunked up, you're just smearing the problem around and risking damage to the rubber parts. I learned the hard way that a proper cleaning kit with the right solvent is the only way to get a lasting fix. That old shortcut can mess up your deck more than it helps.

That specific alcohol smell, what tape were you playing after?
