Had a guy at the shop in Phoenix try to argue with me about lead-free solder for 20 minutes

I was fixing an old tube amp for a client and this random dude walks in, starts saying I have to use lead-free because 'it's 2024.' He wouldn't let up even after I showed him the cracked joints on a modern board he fixed last week. Anyone else deal with people who think newer always means better in repair work?

Honestly he has a point though. Lead free is the standard now and you should be moving with the times. That old stuff is getting phased out for a reason.

Totally get where you're coming from. I mean, the old stuff works but it's just not worth the risk anymore. Had to clear out a whole basement full of that old gear last year and it was a huge pain. Honestly feels like clinging to a flip phone at this point.

Wait wait, you had to clear out a whole basement full of that stuff? Like an entire basement?? Dude that sounds like a nightmare honestly. I can only imagine the mess and the hassle of getting rid of all that. I had to deal with just a couple boxes of old solder and flux last month and I was already over it. That must have taken you forever to haul out. Good on you for getting it done though, I bet that feels good to have that space back now.
