My kitchen reno showed me the power of contact cleaning in repairs

I was rewiring my kitchen lights during a home remodel. The old switches kept flickering and I was ready to buy new ones. I decided to open one up and just wipe the contacts with rubbing alcohol. To my surprise, it started working perfectly right away. It made me see that I often skip the basic step of cleaning before replacing parts. Now I always check for dirt or corrosion first in my repair jobs. This simple habit has made my work faster and cheaper.

Can't believe you opened up a light switch yourself. That stuff is dangerous, man. Honestly just wiping it down fixed it? Wild.

That point about skipping the basic step of cleaning really hits home. I read once that most things that stop working just have dirty parts, not broken ones. @emery199, I get the safety worry, but if you turn off the power, it's usually safe to look. Cleaning contacts can save a lot of time and cash, like the first post shows. It's a simple fix that many miss because they think things are just old. I always try cleaning first now, and it works more than you might expect.

Honestly @oscarc53, cleaning first sounds good but sometimes parts are just worn out. Tbh you can waste a lot of time trying to clean something that needs to be replaced anyway.
