That capacitor was supposed to be 35V, not 16V. Found out the hard way last week.

I was fixing an old monitor from a recycling drop off here in Phoenix. Everything looked fine on the board until I powered it up and saw smoke. Turns out someone before me replaced a cap with a lower voltage rating. Now I always double check every replacement part before soldering. Has anyone else run into swapped parts that nearly ruined a board?

Yeah that sucks, I had a similar cap blow up on a board last year and it's a bummer.

Man, that's rough. Did you figure out if the previous person just grabbed the wrong part from a bin or if they actually thought the lower voltage would work?

Honestly it probably wasn't that serious. Caps are cheap and swapping one out takes like 10 minutes. People act like a blown cap is the end of the world but it's usually just a learning moment. Bet the guy grabbed a 16v from the wrong drawer and didn't notice till it popped. Not a big deal in the big picture.
