TIL a client's ancient VCR tried to eat my multimeter probe in Portland yesterday.

I was checking a voltage on the main board and the tape loading mechanism suddenly cycled, trapping the tip inside the cassette bay for a solid ten minutes while we figured out how to manually eject it.

Wait, it just decided to load a tape out of nowhere? That's wild, what made it suddenly cycle like that? I've never heard of a VCR trying to snack on test gear before. That must have been a real panic trying to get your probe back without breaking anything. Old electronics really do have a mind of their own sometimes!

Ever wonder if old VCRs just get hungry for something other than tapes?

I mean, it was a logic probe, not a test probe. Those old VCRs just see a thin metal stick and think it's snack time.
