Tried fixing a 2015 MacBook Pro with a heat gun set way too high and ended up melting a nearby capacitor I didn't even know was there.

I learned the hard way that even on a low setting, you need to shield everything within a two-inch radius when applying localized heat, so what's your go-to method for protecting surrounding components during a reflow?

Kapton tape and a little aluminum foil shield works perfectly for me every time.

My go-to method is also a prayer to the capacitor gods.

Remember that guy who tried the foil shield trick on his old receiver? He got it working, but then his whole entertainment center smelled like hot pennies for a week. Turns out he didn't check for a tiny ground strap. That smell was the magic smoke trying to leave. He had to go back in and actually fix it right. Sometimes the quick fix just makes a new problem.
