A 30-year vet told me to stop greasing guide rails like I was buttering bread, and cutting back by half stopped my car from hunting.
He said I was over-lubing and creating a film that made the safeties grab unevenly, so I backed off to one light pass every 3 months instead of a heavy coat monthly, and the leveling has been dead-on ever since-anyone else get told they're using too much grease?

Oh man, I think you're actually right about over-lubing causing issues with the safeties grabbing, but just to be picky, a "film" from too much grease usually makes things slip easier, not grab unevenly you know?

Wait hold on @stella_lane you're actually blowing my mind here. "A film from too much grease usually makes things slip easier not grab unevenly" - that's the kind of detail I never even thought about. I've been shooting my 1911 for three years now and I swear I've seen the safeties catch weird after I got carried away with the grease gun. But now I'm wondering if maybe it was just the excess gunk getting into the plunger tube and causing binding rather than the grease itself making the grip safety stick. You might be onto something that changes how I look at this whole thing.

Ngl, "cutting back by half stopped my car from hunting" feels like you're making a bigger deal out of this than it really is. A light pass every 3 months sounds fine but I've seen guys run dry for way longer with zero issues.
