A talk with my old foreman about elevator door timing
I ran into my old foreman, Mike, at the supply house last week. He asked about a tricky door adjustment I was stuck on for a 90s Otis in the old bank building. He said, 'Stop chasing the book spec and just watch the people for a day.' I spent a whole shift just watching the traffic flow and finally saw the real problem... the dwell time was fine, but the close speed was spooking folks. Anyone else had a job where the book answer was wrong for the actual use?

I've chased the book specs into a wall more than once.

Sometimes the wall is where you find the real work though.

Yeah, I've stared at a wall so long trying to solve a problem that I started debating paint textures with it. The wall won, by the way. My best ideas usually come right after I've given up and accepted defeat.
