Question about how I misread a brake adjustment for 5 years

So I was working on a Miconic 10 controller last week and a senior mechanic watched me set the brake gap on a machine room less elevator. He asked why I was leaving a 0.020 inch gap on both sides. I told him that's what I always did. He laughed and said the manual calls for a 0.010 gap on the trailing side only. I pulled up the manual on my phone and sure enough he was right. I had been reading the diagram wrong since I started in 2019. Has anyone else found a basic adjustment they messed up for years?

Happens to the best of us.

Notice how it's always the small stuff that trips us up too. Like you can handle a huge work crisis no problem, then you forget to put the milk back in the fridge and ruin the whole carton. Or you're great at keeping your car clean for months, then you spill coffee on the passenger seat and just leave it. It's like our brains have a limited amount of care to give, and once the big things take their share, the little stuff just slips through the cracks.
