The door closer adjustment advice I got from a building super in Chicago

An old building super in Chicago told me to always set the door closer springs one full turn tighter than the manual says. I thought he was just being lazy and not following specs. After 2 callback repairs in 3 months where doors wouldn't close, I tried his way. No callbacks since then and the doors work perfect in any weather. Has anyone else gotten good advice from non-mechanics that actually worked out?

Ha, yeah that tracks. I had an electrician buddy tell me to always wire outlets with the screw terminals instead of the push-in holes like the box says. Felt like overkill until I had a couple of outlets start buzzing after a year. Switched to his way and never had a problem since.

I mean, is it really that serious? One full turn tighter isn't exactly a scientific breakthrough. Probably just your own mistakes on the first installs. Could have been bad weather seals or a warped door frame too. Not every old timer's hack is gospel.

Ha, guess I've been installing door closers wrong my whole career then.
