Why I always make time for a real lunch on shift
I see many guys grabbing a quick snack instead of sitting down to eat, but I don't think that's wise. From what I've seen, skipping a proper meal makes you sluggish by afternoon. For example, I once had to re-tension a cable because my focus was off after just eating chips. That cost more time than a 20-minute break would have. Some crews say it keeps the job moving faster, but mistakes from hunger slow you down more. I feel we need to treat our bodies right to do good work. Taking a short lunch helps you stay alert with all the climbing and lifting we do.

Last Thursday our site had three emergency calls backed up. I ate a protein bar while driving between locations and still finished two hours earlier than if I'd stopped for a sit down meal. Sometimes the job flow really doesn't allow a full break, and forcing one can make a busy day worse. A decent snack in the truck can keep your energy up without killing momentum. Isn't it more about reading the day than having one strict rule?

Totally get where you're coming from. I've been the queen of the sad desk lunch (or more honestly, just coffee and regret) and it never ends well. My brain just goes fuzzy by two pm and I start making dumb, avoidable mistakes. Taking that real break to actually eat something decent is the only thing that resets my focus. Otherwise I'm just a hungry zombie pushing paper around. It's a lesson I keep learning the hard way.
