A founder at a Denver coffee shop told me his best hires came from casual chats, not job boards.
He said he met his current ops lead just by asking about their dog. Has anyone else found a key team member through a random conversation?

Doesn't this just show that real interest builds better connections? I've noticed the best working relationships start when you see the person first, not the resume. It cuts through the formal noise.

Wondering if this works for bigger companies or just small shops... seems like a coffee shop has way more chances for those random chats. What @dakota_patel98 said about seeing the person first makes sense, but how do you even start doing that on purpose without it feeling fake? Feels like a skill you'd have to practice, like knowing when to just talk about a dog and when you're being weird.

But what if you're not trying to build a connection? Sometimes you just need to get a job done with a vendor and you don't need to be friends first.
