A networking event in Austin went silent when my phone died right before a pitch

I was at a startup mixer at a co-working space downtown, ready to share my app idea with a potential investor. Right as I pulled up my demo, my phone battery hit zero. I quickly asked the person next to me if I could borrow their charger for five minutes, and we ended up talking the whole time while it powered up. He actually connected me with a different investor who was a better fit for my project. Has anyone else turned a tech fail into a solid connection?

People get way too lucky with these stories. Most of the time a dead phone just makes you look unprepared. What if that guy didn't have a charger or was in a hurry? You'd be stuck with no pitch and a bad first impression. Relying on random luck isn't a real strategy. It's better to just be ready and avoid the problem in the first place.

Yeah "relying on random luck isn't a real strategy" is exactly right, it's just not a sustainable way to go through life. These happy accident stories are fun to read but they're survivorship bias at its finest. Better to be the person who shows up fully prepared and never needs a miracle to save the day.

Dropped my phone in a puddle right before a pitch at a coffee shop meetup... pulled out my soaked notes and just started talking from memory. Ended up stammering through most of it but the guy I was pitching to laughed and said he'd invested in worse presentations. Got a follow up meeting out of it somehow. Guess there's something to be said for looking like a complete mess and still pushing through.

My friend's laptop crashed during a big presentation.
