Had a total networking fail at a startup pitch event in Austin last month
I spent the whole time just handing out my card like a robot, then realized I hadn't actually learned anyone's name. How do you make real connections at those fast-paced things?

Ever try just not giving out your card? I stopped bringing them and it forces you to actually talk.

Ugh, I once asked a guy about his dog just to avoid talking shop.

Totally get that move, @carr.elliot. Read a thing about how asking about pets is a classic small talk trick people use at work events. It's way easier than trying to force a conversation about quarterly reports. Plus, you almost always get a cute picture out of it.
