Honestly, I just read that 85% of jobs are filled through networking, not online applications
Found that stat in a newsletter from a startup incubator in Austin. Makes me wonder, how many of you actually track where your best connections come from?

Seriously, that stat is probably just made up to sell networking courses.

Totally agree with you. Those numbers always sound too perfect to be real. They want you to feel like you're missing out on some secret trick only they can teach. It's all just marketing to make you buy their stuff. I've seen the same kind of fake stats used to sell business coaching and leadership seminars. They pick a number that sounds impressive but has no real proof behind it. It's lazy and it makes the whole industry look bad.

But even if the number is wrong, the basic idea feels true. Most of my good jobs came from knowing someone, not from sending out a hundred resumes. The real question is, what kind of networking actually works? Is it just going to events and collecting business cards, or is it something slower and more real?
