I finally had a networking win that paid off 6 years later

Back in 2018 at a startup mixer in Austin, I traded business cards with a guy who seemed totally clueless, and last month he referred me to a client that wrote a $12,000 check without even negotiating.

Yeah, "slow burns" is exactly right. @diana_black nailed it. That's the thing about networking, most people think it's all about the immediate score. But real connections take time to bake. Six years is crazy, but it shows you made a genuine impression on that guy, even if he seemed clueless at first. Stuff like that gives me hope for all the coffee chats and random hellos that feel pointless in the moment.

Girl, you just made me remember this one painter I hired years ago for a side job. He was this quiet guy, barely said two words the whole time. Fast forward like 4 years and he randomly calls me up referring me to a huge commercial gig. I didn't even remember his name, but he remembered mine and how I handled a small leaky pipe situation. It really is just about being decent and letting time do its thing.

Wild how slow burns like that actually work out.
