I finally hit 500 connections on LinkedIn and half of them are people I met at a single chaotic conference in 2022.
It matters because I realized I've been calling that trip a 'networking fail' for years, but apparently I collected more business cards than I thought, right?

That part about calling it a 'networking fail' for years really hits home. I read a blog post once that said we often judge networking success by immediate deals, not by the actual connections made. Sounds like you built a real foundation without even knowing it.

Hot take: Numbers lie, connections don't.
But how many of those 500 people would you actually text for advice? We all collect cards like trophies after those events, right? It feels like a game. You were so sure it was a fail because you didn't get a sale that week. Maybe the win was just filling the pipeline with people who sort of know your face. That's more than most get from a bad conference.

Yeah jamesm38 is onto something with the trophy cards thing. Reminds me of this guy I met once who bragged about his thousand LinkedIn connects, but then couldn't get a single intro when he needed to switch jobs. All those names and no real back-and-forth, you know? Makes you wonder what we're even counting.
