I finally said yes to a coffee meeting with a guy who just wanted to 'pick my brain'.

He showed up with zero prep, asked me to solve his basic business model problems for free, and it wasted an hour of my Tuesday morning. Is it better to flat out refuse these 'brain picking' requests, or should you try to turn them into something useful, like a paid consulting intro?

How about setting a clear boundary before you meet? I started asking for a few specific questions in advance, and it filters out the people who just want free labor. It saves everyone's time and sets a professional tone.

Totally agree... started doing that last year and it cut my pointless calls in half.

Always ask for their three main questions in an email first.
