I just tossed out a $30 jar of 'artisan' pickling spice after my grandma's recipe called for the basic stuff from the grocery store.
The simple blend she wrote on a card in 1982 makes my cucumbers taste like childhood summers, not some fancy chef's experiment. Anyone else have a family recipe that proves the simple way is best?

My friend had the same thing happen with her mom's pancake recipe. She bought some expensive vanilla bean paste, but the recipe just called for a teaspoon of the cheap imitation stuff from the grocery store. The fancy stuff made the whole batch taste wrong.

Wait, did she try cutting the fancy vanilla amount in half?

Sometimes the cheap stuff is the real secret ingredient!
